Piping Cord

Piping cord gives upholstered furniture its clean, defined edges. Covered in fabric and sewn into seams, it adds structure, visual detail, and durability to every piece.

Piping, sometimes called welting, is a narrow strip of fabric-covered cord that is sewn into the seams of upholstered furniture. It serves both a structural and decorative purpose, reinforcing edges where fabric panels meet while creating the crisp, defined lines that distinguish professional upholstery from amateur work.

The cord itself is available in a range of diameters, typically from 3mm for fine, subtle piping up to 10mm or more for bold, statement edging. Thinner cords suit delicate chairs and scatter cushions, while thicker cords work well on sofas, bolsters, and outdoor furniture where a more pronounced edge is desired.

We supply both cotton and synthetic piping cord. Cotton cord is the traditional choice, soft and easy to work with, ideal for indoor furniture. Synthetic alternatives offer better moisture resistance and are recommended for outdoor cushions, boat upholstery, and any application where the furniture may be exposed to damp conditions.
