Reddit-Style Guide: Is a Mid-Century Chair Worth Reupholstering?

Mid-century chair threads on Reddit usually come down to one question: is this a valuable design piece or just an old chair with nice legs?

Short Answer

A mid-century chair is worth reupholstering when the frame is sound, the design is good, and the work respects the original proportions. It is less sensible when the frame is poor, repairs exceed the chair value, or the piece is a low-quality reproduction.

Preserve The Shape

Mid-century furniture often depends on clean lines and precise proportions. Overstuffing the seat, using bulky foam, or choosing a fabric that is too thick can make the chair look wrong.

A good upholstery plan should keep the profile crisp while improving comfort.

Check The Webbing And Foam

Many mid-century chairs have tired foam, perished rubber webbing, or flattened padding. New fabric alone may not solve the sit.

Ask whether the seat support and foam should be replaced as part of the job.

Fabric Should Fit The Design

Plain wool-style weaves, textured fabrics, leather, and restrained colours often suit mid-century forms. Large modern patterns can work, but they may overpower a slim chair.

If the chair is valuable or attributed to a known designer, consider whether the fabric choice affects resale value.

Do Not Ignore The Wood

Loose joints, scratched arms, cane damage, or failed glue should be assessed before upholstery. A beautiful new cover will not fix a moving frame.

For chairs with exposed timber, upholstery and frame restoration should be planned together.
