Reddit upholstery threads often ask whether it is okay to buy fabric online and take it to an upholsterer. Usually yes in principle, but there are several ways to get it wrong.

You can often provide your own fabric, but it must be upholstery-grade, suitable for the furniture, fire-compliant where required, wide enough, ordered in the right quantity, and checked for repeat, flaws, and cleaning requirements.

Ask Before Buying

The safest route is to send the fabric link or specification before ordering. Include composition, width, rub count, fire treatment, pattern repeat, and intended use.

If the workshop says it is unsuitable, that is much better to know before you have bought ten metres.

Upholstery Fabric Is Not Just Heavy Curtain Fabric

Seating fabric needs to handle abrasion, tension, seams, body oils, sunlight, and cleaning. Some curtain fabrics stretch, fray, mark, or wear too quickly on seats.

A fabric that works on a cushion or curtain may fail on a sofa seat within months.

Fire Safety Comes First

UK upholstered furniture has fire-safety requirements. Some fabrics need treatment or an interliner; some may not be acceptable for the intended use.

This is especially important for commercial work, rentals, and customer-supplied fabrics with unclear specifications.

Order Enough, But Not Blindly

Pattern repeat, direction, pile, fabric width, and furniture shape all affect quantity. Stripes, checks, and large repeats need more allowance than plain cloth.

The upholsterer should calculate quantity after seeing photos and understanding the fabric.
