Upholstery on Tottenham Court Road

Our workshop is at 304 Tottenham Court Road, WC1E 6HP. Walk in, talk to us about your furniture, and see thousands of fabrics in person. No appointment needed.

How to Find Us

We are on the east side of Tottenham Court Road, between Goodge Street and Warren Street stations. If you are coming from Goodge Street (Northern line), turn left out of the station and walk north for about two minutes. You will see us on your left. From Warren Street (Northern and Victoria lines), head south for three minutes and we are on your right.

There is no need to book ahead. The workshop is open Monday to Saturday, and you are welcome to drop in during working hours. If you have smaller pieces like dining chairs or cushions, you can bring them with you. For anything bigger, we will arrange collection from your address once you have approved the quote.

Bus routes 24, 29, 73, and 134 all stop within a minute of the workshop. If you are driving, there is metered parking on side streets off Tottenham Court Road, though public transport is easier for this part of London.

What to Expect When You Visit

When you walk in, you will see our fabric library: over 12,000 samples from suppliers including Warwick, organised by type and colour. Picking fabric from a screen is guesswork. Seeing it under natural light, feeling the weight and texture, holding it against your existing furniture or paint samples, that is how you make a decision you will not regret.

We will talk through your project properly. If you are thinking about reupholstering a sofa, we will explain what is involved: strip-down, frame repair, new webbing and springs, padding, and final covering. If your piece just needs a new fabric and the internals are sound, we will tell you that too. No upselling.

You can also order free fabric samples to take home or have posted to you. Most people who visit end up narrowing their choice to two or three options and then decide at home with the swatches in the actual room.

London's Furniture Street

Tottenham Court Road has been the centre of London's furniture trade since the 18th century. Cabinet makers, upholsterers, and furniture dealers lined both sides of the road for over 200 years. Heal's has been here since 1810. The street earned its reputation because skilled tradespeople clustered together, and customers knew they could compare quality and craftsmanship in one trip.

Most of the old furniture shops are gone now, replaced by the Crossrail development and chain retailers. But the trade itself has not disappeared. We are still here, doing the same work that has been done on this street for centuries: building frames, stuffing seats, and covering furniture in good cloth. The tools and techniques have not changed much. A well-made traditional upholstered piece still relies on hand-tied springs, layered padding, and careful stitching.

Nearby Landmarks

The workshop sits in an interesting part of London. The British Museum is a ten-minute walk east along Great Russell Street. UCL and its surrounding colleges are just behind us on Gower Street. Fitzrovia, with its restaurants, galleries, and independent shops, stretches west towards Great Portland Street. If you are visiting any of these, the workshop is a straightforward detour.

We get a good number of customers from the universities and hospitals nearby. Furnished flats around Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia often have tired sofas and armchairs that are structurally fine but need recovering. Landlords and property managers find it cheaper and faster to reupholster than to replace, especially when the original furniture is better quality than anything new at the same price point.
